Morning broke grey, wet, and non-idyllic with heavy rain pounding down, driving the humidity to 105%, condensing.

I was on my stool at the island in the kitchen, fruit in the blender with Kona searching for the button she wanted, and a familiar buzz of overlapping voices around me.

Myrtle was still MIA, but we were not yet at the stage where anyone was sending search parties. The house was functioning as it always did—like a slightly feral family with better skincare.

I was nursing a half coffee and working through some morning notes when Sharon started recapping her dream, which apparently involved a seduction protocol being turned into a musical.

“I think Act Two is all about mango monster safety,” she said.

“Are kiwi fruits supposed to be red?” Kona asked. “This one is extra furry.”

The back porch was glowing again by dinner, lit by string lights and the warm, fragrant promise of grilled food. Gus had turned the backyard into a minor cathedral of flame and charcoal, and the smell of citrus-marinated chicken and roasted peppers hung in the air like divine intervention.

We were all in various stages of personal style as usual—Kona in a mesh sarong she’d tied like a belt, Louisa in a damp tank top, Sharon still somehow crisp in just a pony tail and her unique presentation that made me weak kneed. Callie, of course, loaded with her tech and balancing a full plate on one side and a glowing tablet on the other. Gus was adorned in his apron, over boxers, labeling him “Harem Chief Chef,” and was plating like he’d trained in Paris.

“You’re going to ruin me for restaurants,” Weesa said, admiring the offerings on her plate. She bit into a juicy, crusted shrimp drenched in his custom sauce.

“Technically,” Gus said, “we are a restaurant. If the restaurant was clothing optional and banned Yelp. We feed anyone that stops by. With neighborhood pricing. That sauce has a bite this time - I put bird peppers in it.”

Weesa, fanning her mouth with tears streaming, seemed to be at a loss for words as she turned different shades of pink, roasting from the inside. Kona snortled and I tried to suppress my own laughter.

Gus offered peach bubbles in a can, which seemed, from her reaction to a big gulp, to intensify the experience. She broke for the house at a run on a mission of personal urgency. Even Tonya was smiling at our hot trainee’s animated departure.

From inside the house, we heard Louisa finally find her voice. “Holy shrimpballs, batman! Wooo!”

“Hard to say if she liked it or not,” Gus observed, looking thoughtfully at the back door.

The sun had surrendered for the day, and the porch was humming with margarita-fueled laughter and the satisfaction that comes from surviving another event through team effort. Gus had set up the blender like a command station. He was wearing boxers and a layer of lime zest. Myrtle wore a sarong with suspicious fluid stains and one hoop earring, in the lead and starting her second round. The rest of us filled out the porch with an extra-casual midwesterners-on-extended-vacation vibe.

It was a good evening. The kind you feel in your chest. Safe. Stupid. Alive.

The backyard was prepped like we were hosting a wedding — if weddings involved rigged hammocks, suspicious oils, and a vintage chat mod who wore a silver metallic slingshot with open tips and had never once filtered herself.

The “set” was quiet with what I would call “pre-disaster calm.”

The stream had been running for fifteen minutes. I was speaking softly, holding the audience with a low, even rhythm. Electric candles flickered. Weesa lay reclined in the hammock in a sheer wrap, bathed in oils, her legs draped in a pose that conveyed “practiced elegance.” She looked like a goddess prepared to receive wisdom. Or maybe tips.

“Viewer count is dropping, just crossed under thirty one thousand six hundred,” Callie said from stage left.

The reporter showed up right on time, which she now probably realizes was her first mistake.

She had the posture of someone who took notes for fun and wore closed-toed shoes in 100% humidity because dignity mattered. Young, certainly underpaid, and holding a messenger bag that had clearly never seen a glitter wave. Her press badge said Samantha Ortiz, Staff Writer, The Key West Citizen. Her eyes said, I’ve made a terrible mistake.

“Millie?” she asked, flinching as Karl greeted her by honking from Myrtle’s lap.

“That’s me,” I said, standing up in Weesa’s hot pink JUICY shorts, a hair tie backy, glitter accents, and a forced smile.

“You keep rolling no matter what happens,” Sharon said, locking eyes with me as she adjusted the florescent green micro floss that was pretending to be her professional wardrobe. “No interruptions. No pauses. No sudden zooms if I bend over. Got it?”

“Got it,” I said. “Unless we get a tornado or another mayoral citation.”

She arched a brow. “Tornado gets you ten seconds. Anything else, you keep shooting.”

The set was the back porch, freshly mopped and staged with a chaise lounge, three citrus-scented candles, and a strategically placed chilled glass of water.

The porch was thick with afterglow and mango. Not metaphorically—Kona had dumped half a bottle of body oil into the hammock earlier and the air still smelled like a tropical three-way.

Louisa lay draped sideways across a chaise in a birthday suit freed from bondage, sipping from a mason jar labeled “Post-Coital Recovery” in Callie’s neat printing.

It was exactly two weeks later. Sharon had insisted we take time to “ramp brand intensity” before the first official seduction stream launched. That was code for building suspense and pretending we had a schedule. We were in the back yard because the city inspectors still hadn’t shown up to approve Gus’s repairs on the front side, and because we didn’t need even more gawkers than we had already attracted from just existing.

The program had been titled, declared, planned, and commissioned. Stream One: Kona seducing Louisa.

It was supposed to be playful, soft-focus, high-gloss, with candlelight and ambient steam from a cleverly placed patio fogger. I was behind the camera, Sharon was in my ear, Callie was offscreen logging data, and Myrtle was moderating the live chat, probably in a tacky onesie. Maybe without it.

Louisa wore a kimono that looked like it was made from the tears of hornets - see through, fiery orange and too short to sit in public. Kona, on the other hand, had opted for something less concealing — spots of airbrushed gold body shimmer and a drape so translucent it had no shadow. The stream opened with soft jazz, scripted lines, and a visual of Louisa playfully turning her head away while Kona leaned in with a flirtatious pout.

Louisa steered her cart into our Key West driveway with wheel and brake action like she was trying to avoid an imaginary roadblock. The avocados in the back slid sideways with a thunk, but without taking casualties. We’d survived a grocery run on a Saturday morning with only minor bruising and one man asking if Louisa gave lessons in body language. (She does not. Yet.) And one couple asking me if I would bring the stream team to their porch for a “back to nature” program. I declined.

The metal porch roof shimmered with heat - and motion.

Gus was up there in board shorts and a sweat-soaked tank, one leg planted wide, bracing as he hammer-tapped new metal shake panels into place. There was a ladder on display - safety third - and his tool belt slung like a sash across his hips.

Callie was also on the roof. Topless, of course. Sitting with her back against the wall. Lab notebook on her knees and pen in hand. Watching him.

And Kona? She was halfway out the window, naked as far as I could tell, back arched like a cat waking from a nap, pointing downward with two fingers like she was directing air traffic to a landing strip made of Gus.

Louisa and I hit the porch steps, two bags each, and tried to pretend like this was normal.

“What exactly are we walking into?” I asked Sharon, who was lounging in the doorway in branded floss, a tablet in hand and a brow furrowed hard and deep like drainage ditch.

“Field study,” she said, not looking up. “Callie’s observing arousal response triggers under sustained manual labor.”

“Of course she is,” I muttered.

“And Kona’s demonstrating applied motion seduction theory. Gus is the variable.”

I blinked. “She’s certainly delivering the motions. He knows he’s the variable, right?”

Sharon scrolled on her tablet. “Not officially. But he’s surprisingly responsive. We may need a second test group.”

Louisa snorted and nudged the front screen door open with her hip.

I followed, then stopped short. “This whole thing smells like a bad idea. Like, scented candle plus fireworks kind of bad.”

That was when Sharon smiled. The ‘I’m cooking something up’ one. The one with teeth. The one that can knock a Navy ensign out cold at seven yards.

“I have an idea. I think it’s time we franchise the art of seduction.”

I waited.

She kept going.

“Workshops. One-on-one coaching. Virtual seduction guidance. We’ll script a universal framework based on personality profiles, target-response conditioning, and market data. We can license it. Teach the teachers. Create a certification path.”

I set my bags down. “I have frozens. But —just to tide me over — what are you talking about?”

Louisa carried on into the kitchen humming a beat box mix of bolero meets BTO because music is her soul’s way of finding resonance.

“Franchise operations is huge money, Millie. It’s a way we can step away from the camera. Have others do the heavy lifting. There’s more nerds in the US than sunflowers. And Callie’s data says at least 23% of them would bite on coaching for seducing a girl. We know that business.”

“And Callie is what, building the syllabus by creeping on Gus’s glutes?”

“She’s logging reaction intervals. It’s data.”

“It’s always data with her.” I sighed and looked toward the underside of porch roof, where Gus was tapping and Kona was chirping.

“I’m going to need more, once I get these put away. You know we have a stream tomorrow at 5:00?”

Sharon waved it away like a disrespected gnat. “It’s all good.”

I wasn’t reassured. I could feel the clouds building. It seemed like it was going to be a long week.

Sharon rode in my hip pocket as I transited the living room and into our communal center of creativity and regeneration, also known as the kitchen.

The sink looked like the back end of a failed chemistry experiment. It was full of something that might have once been a smoothie. A spoon stuck out at a 45-degree angle like it was trying to escape.

“Was someone planning to clean up this mess?” I asked, stepping around a rogue trail of quinoa on the floor and setting my bags on the table.

Louisa looked up from the fridge. “I think it was an experimental protein shake. Gus tried adding cinnamon and kombucha this morning. I guess it backfired while we were out.”

“Backfired?”

She held up a Tupperware lid with a crack in it. “Explosively. Must have gone off while we were at the store. Gus was probably up on the roof.”

Sharon had the look of a woman who’d found her next mountain to climb, and didn’t notice it was made of Jell-O.

“We don’t need a big launch, Mills” she said. “Just three test streams. One each from Kona, me, and you. We show different seduction methods. Play to our strengths. We can use the techniques on Weesa buns in the shows.”

Louisa nodded slowly. “I like it. And I’ve got some ideas about what to not wear.”

“Of course you do,” I said, loading three boxes of ice cream into the freezer. “Because you’re feral. You live on exposure.”

Sharon’s ice blue eyes were lit up with brand domination visions. “If we nail the streams, we can track engagement, poll the fans, and start building curriculum modules. We could soft-launch the franchise concept by the end of the quarter.”

“Didn’t we get chicken thighs?” I asked. “There’s two packs of chicken sausage here.” I held up the evidence. “What about the streams already scheduled?”

“Supposed to be three pounds of thighs,” Louisa confirmed from the pantry.

“We’ll do them first. It will take a few weeks to build the entire model and do all the planning.”

“Callie leaves on Tuesday,” I reminded her.

“Maybe we can convince her to stay. Publish another study or something. She’s weak for data.”

“And Gus. But I suppose we all are.”

“We could maybe offer some Gusification...” Sharon floated out the idea.

“I’m pretty sure you don’t have the authorization to make that offer,” I said. “And don’t you go daring him to do her either!”

“Fine.” With bare jiggles and killer cheekbones, Sharon had a pout that would pull a hard sigh from a moose.

“You get your three streams,” I said, relenting and pulling a limp bag of previously-frozen peas from the sack. “But if anything combusts—literally or emotionally—I’m pinning it to your tax ID.”

The pout evaporated like smoke in a tornado and jiggleage reached stroke-inducing levels in the audience. “Deal!”

Louisa beamed. “I want show notes on the slow-burn seduction class before we go live.”

“You’ll get nothing, and like it,” Sharon replied. “We need organic truth out there, not you with some RainGasm-induced launch like last time.”

Shifting targets, she headed up the stairs, yelling. “Kona! We’re green to stream!”

I didn’t say it out loud, but I could already hear the ominous theme music for our next disaster playing in the distance.

Louisa made a face as she turned on the water and started processing the failed science experiment in the sink.
